The new date and time for the Work Session of the Brantley County Commission will be the first Tuesday of the month at 4pm at the County Commission Office (behind the DQ). The goal of the Commission is to shorten the length of time between the work session and the regular meeting. This reduces the "add on" items on the agenda and the "surprises" that the Commission can get hit with in the regular meeting. This is a common practice throughout the State and will help improve the efficiency of the Board and its meetings.
The regular meetings will continue on the second Tuesday of each month at 6pm at the Brantley County Courthouse.

County Commissioner's Meeting Last Night
The Brantley County Commission worked through 36 items last night, plus 11 items on the County Manager's update. The board postponed several proposed add on items and some of the regular and consent agenda items to the March work session for further review before acting upon them.
The main theme of the meeting was concern about Brantley County's financial situation. The county manager reported that there is a small amount of money in the checking account and $533,063.54 in the money market account. The Tax Commissioner reported earlier that collections for December 08 tax bills is at approximately 72%. This, coupled with the fact that the county spent over $2.5 million of this year's tax revenue on last years bills, has the county heading for another cash crunch.
For these reasons, a freeze on hiring or filling new positions was voted in. The board recognizes that there are situations that will have to be looked at on a case by case basis, but the baseline is no new hiring.
Many other items were handled. Called meetings were set for Monday, February 23rd at 1:30pm at the County Commissioner's office to review TAN Line of Credit bids and at 2pm to meet with the Planning Commission.

Commissioners Attend Training Class

A group of County Commissioners attended a training class and a legislative conference in Atlanta on February 9th and 10th. During the meetings, it became clear that the State of Georgia has serious financial issues. There is little doubt that the counties will not get the Homestead Exemption monies due them by the State, pushing Brantley County another $500,000 in the wrong financial direction. Some other good headway was made on issues critical to Brantley County during individual sessions with Deputy Whip Mark Williams and Senator Jeff Chapman.
For more information and updates, attend the regular meeting of the Brantley County Commission on Tuesday, February 17th at 6pm at the Brantley County Courthouse.
